The Young Israel of Woodmere established a Sabbath-observant Little League team in the
mid-1960s. The team would only play on Sundays or weekdays and competed with teams from
synagogues throughout the area and were coached by members of the synagogue’s men’s club. Unlike
the current Little League teams in today’s Orthodox league, the players wore real uniforms and
spiked shoes. From left to right are (first row) Noam Marans, Zvi Kamenetzky, Ezra Friedlander,
unidentified, Arthur Luxenberg, Mordechai Kamenetzky, and David Bodek; (second row) Ira
Heller, unidentified, Maury Heller, Zvi Marans, Billy Eisenberg, William Hochman, Howard
Friedman, unidentified, Ellie Libin, Fred Schulman, and unidentified; (third row) coaches Irwin
Luxenberg, Morris Hochman, unidentified, and Emanuel Libin.
